Wednesday’s Ligue 1 clash between Nice and Marseille was temporarily suspended due to the emergence of homophobic chants and banners.

Referee Clément Turpin paused the game after 27 minutes, resuming play 10 minutes later after every banner was removed.

One sign made reference to the word ‘pedale’, which means ‘pedal’ and is a derogatory term for a gay person.

A second banner read: “Full stands for a more gay stadium.”

This comes just one week after a Ligue 2 game between Nancy and Le Mans was suspended shortly before half-time.
