Real Madrid are not expected to be very active in the January transfer window but if Guillem Balague is correct, they could have quite a summer on their hands.

The Spanish football journalist revealed in his Sky Sports column that Real Madrid will be targeting both Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois at the end of the season.

Both players have ongoing contract situations at Chelsea, with Courtois’s current deal expiring in 2019 and Hazard’s in 2020.

Real Madrid clearly believe they have a chance at the duo as part of their wider strategy of signing big players.

Balague wrote: “Real Madrid need big names and they have lined up Courtois, they want Hazard.

“Those are the kind of names they want for next season. Doesn’t mean they will get them, but that’s the shopping list they have.”

Balague also provided an update on Real Madrid’s potential chase for Harry Kane. Karim Benzema has struggled for form this season while the Englishman has dazzled, leading to obvious speculation that Madrid will look to replace Benzema with Kane.

“It’s becoming clearer in the minds of the directors of Real Madrid they need another striker, that Benzema has to be sold. He doesn’t even have the backing of the fans,” Balague explained.

“I don’t think in the case of Kane there’s a rush to go anywhere, and in the case of Real Madrid it’s one to monitor.

“I’m not sure he will be an immediate target. For them, Hazard and Courtois will be top targets in the summer.”

In other words: Tottenham fans can exhale for now but Chelsea supporters have reason for concern.

Madrid have shown over the years that when they really want someone, they usually get their man.
