Real Madrid look set to become the latest club to introduce wage cuts for their playing staff following the coronavirus pandemic.

Barcelona confirmed earlier this week that their squad would be cutting wages by 70 per cent in order to help keep paying their non-playing staff.

Similar, although not quite so severe, measures have been introduced by Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.

And now El Pais say that it is “inevitable” that Los Blancos will have to do the same despite a previous guarantee from president Florentino Perez that it would not be the case.|

The report states that only those at the club with the biggest incomes will be affected, which will likely see Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos all have to take a mandatory reduction so that Real Madrid can pay their other 800 members of staff.

Reductions certainly won’t be as high as Barcelona’s however, with Real Madrid’s finances in a much healthier state.

The capital club have a debt of just €28m in comparison to Barca’s which is thought to be around €200m.

Real’s wage budget is less than 50 per cent of their income whereas Barcelona’s is reported to be closer to 80 per cent.

Spain is currently 16 days into a 30 day lockdown, with only Italy suffering a worse mortality rate in Europe.
