Following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has insisted the club will go back in this summer’s transfer window.

The club’s last major signing was James Rodríguez, who was brought in after winning the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup.

Since then the squad has been strengthened but no Gálactico has been signed, with the club’s transfer focus turning to up-and-coming players. The sale of Ronaldo changes things and there is now pressure on Madrid to bring in at least one big name.

“We are aware of the level of demands which this team is subject to,” Pérez said. “We are Madrid and we always want more.

“We must strengthen the present and the future. This is a great squad and it will be strengthened with magnificent players.”

So far this summer, Madrid have been linked with big money moves for the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Eden Hazard.

Replacing Ronaldo – who scored 451 goals for the club in nine years at the Bernabéu – is no simple task and it’s likely the Spanish giants will make two major signings to take his place.

Madrid could yet sell Mateo Kovačić and Gareth Bale this summer too, with both players looking to play more regularly.
