Spain’s two biggest clubs are set to challenge for Thiago Alcântara this summer.

After five years in Germany, Thiago is free to leave Bayern Munich should the Bundesliga champions receive an acceptable bid this summer.

A member of Spain’s World Cup squad, there is no decision on his future yet but it looks increasingly likely that he isn’t key to the plans of new Bayern boss Niko Kovač.

According to Sport, new Barcelona technical director Eric Abidal has made it a priority to bring Thiago back to the club. The 27-year-old left Barcelona for Bayern in 2013 after eight years at Camp Nou.

However, they face stern competition.

New Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui is said to be interested in the midfielder. Madrid have an exceptional midfield but Luka Modrić will turn 33 before the season begins and they could lose Mateo Kovačić, who is unhappy with his playing time.

The report says Thiago prefers a return to Barcelona, where he would replace outgoing legend Andrés Iniesta.

Bayern Munich have a €70m asking price for Thiago but would be open to negotiation.
