Wilson had played a bigger role with the Saints over the last year after they sacked vice-chairman Les Reed last November and asked Wilson to take on more responsibility.

Wilson was on Southampton’s board of directors and played a majour role in bringing in manager Ralph Hasenhüttl as well as Virgil van Dijk from Celtic and captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Bayern Munich.

The former Falkirk, Watford, and Huddersfield man had previously turned down the Rangers role on two separate occasions and will reportedly bring his own staff with him to Scotland.
