Chivas and 14-time Mexico international winger Isaác Brizuela is aspiring to compete in the 2022 World Cup and believes he may already achieved that if he had moved to Europe earlier in his career.

Brizuela was called up for the 2014 World Cup but didn’t play a single minute and only featured in a pair of friendlies between then and last year’s edition in Russia.

However, the 29-year-old was a regular in their pre-Gold Cup friendlies this summer and believes he is good enough to go to Qatar.

“I have it in mind (World Cup Qatar 2022). I know that some years are missing but time flies by, so I’m going to try to earn a place with my club performances.

“My first focus is doing things well at Chivas. I know that an opportunity will come later if I try to take advantage of it, and then I want to keep my place in the selection.”

Brizuela also revealed in an interview with Medio Tiempo that immediately after heading to the World Cup with Mexico, Celtic made a bid for his services, with Futbol Total reporting that Rangers were interested in well.

However, six months later, Toluca finally let Brizuela leave after Chivas paid over €6m to acquire him.

“I heard about the rumours (of Celtic’s interest), but I didn’t want to think about them too much as I didn’t want to get distracted.

“In the end, I’m not sure if they (Celtic) spoke to a (Toluca) director, but when I was with Toluca, Celtic did come in for me and the club didn’t let me go because the club (Celtic) didn’t want to pay what Toluca wanted.

“Being here at Chivas, I’m not sure if a (Celtic) scout came over or has come over (recently), but I won’t give up hope.

“I know that I have a certain age, but I won’t give up hope that such a moment could come.”

Brizuela has been a star at Chivas, featuring 174 times in four-and-a-half years at the club, winning a Liga MX title, two Copa MX crowns, and the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.
