The Guardian shed light on continuing negotiations between Newcastle manager Rafael Benítez and the club to extend his contract, which will expire on 30 June.
According to the report, talks are expected to go on at least another week after telephone and e-mail conversations between Benítez and Newcastle chairman Lee Charnley.
Benítez and owner Mike Ashley sat down and opened talks last Thursday and it’s expected the two will meet again prior to any signed agreements, with the 59-year-old expecting written guarantees of any and all promises Ashley makes.
Benítez has long been desperate for additional funds to spend on new players and Ashley will reportedly give the 59-year-old a £50m transfer budget in addition to any money that’s raised from outgoing players.
Amongst things still in need of being hashed out is Ashley’s reluctance to bring in players over 25 and more wage bill flexibility.
The Magpies boss is ambitious to get Newcastle competing for European places and domestic trophies again and reportedly wants to prioritise signing 12-goal loan star Salomón Rondón to a permanent deal.
