Thomas Tuchel has revealed why he chose to join Paris Saint-Germain over Bayern Munich this summer.

Tuchel signed a two-year contract with PSG back in May having spent a year away from football after the end of his Borussia Dortmund tenure.

The German’s career in Ligue 1 has got off to a flyer with six wins from his first six games in charge – a new club record.

But he says things could all have been so different if Bayern had got to him a bit quicker.

“With Bayern there were only loose contacts, nothing more,” the 45-year-old told French outlet L’Equipe.

“Their move came too late, I had already chosen PSG.

“After Dortmund, I had the profound feeling of having an experience abroad, if it was suitable.”

Earlier this weekend, Les Parisiens president Nasser Al-Khelaifi described Tuchel as “the best coach in the world” and on Tuesday night he will face the first major test of those credentials when his side travels to face Liverpool in the Champions League.

“At Bayern, it is different,” says the former Mainz boss.

“The club never speaks of the Champions League, even if they want to win it. They always say: the championship comes first, the championship comes first.”

His fluent grasp of French certainly appears to have helped Tuchel settle into his new surroundings, and he believes it’s important for the coach of PSG to speak the local language.

“It is a sign of respect for the institution PSG when the coach speaks French,” he added.

“It is the language of the locker room. The players speak Portuguese, English, German – but I always try to speak French with them.”
