The 2022 World Cup is set to cause trouble for fixture-makers across Europe.
With the tournament taking place in Qatar, it will be held from 21 November – 18 December.
Traditionally that would be a busy spell for domestic football in Europe, so seasons will have to be rearranged to work around the Fifa showpiece.
According to the BBC, the Premier League are already putting plans in place for the 2022/23 season and the demands on players will be huge. A report on Thursday says drafted plans have a Premier League matchday scheduled for 12 November 2022 … just nine days before the World Cup begins.
The season will also have to begin a week earlier and end a week later than usual.
Such a huge ask will raise questions around player fatigue, especially leading into a World Cup, and the Premier League aim to restart on Boxing Day, just a week after the World Cup final.
However the plans end up looking, a minimum six-week interruption in the middle of the season is inevitable.
Meanwhile, Uefa will not arrange a schedule for the 2022/23 Champions League season for at least another year.
