Mauricio Pochettino has challenged his Tottenham squad to “step up” after Dele Alli became the latest high-profile player to suffer an injury.

Alli was forced off at Craven Cottage with a hamstring problem, adding further strain to Spurs’ attacking options with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son also absent.

However, Pochettino believes fringe players now have the opportunity to impress with first-team regulars unavailable for selection.

“You know very well the action,” he told reporters when quizzed about the injury. “We need to assess him in the next few days.

“The hamstring is a muscle we need to be careful with, but it doesn’t look great. When you see a player put his hands on his hamstring, you worry.

“But when there are problems with some players there are opportunities for others, and today was a massive opportunity for others to step up.”

Spurs play the second-leg of their EFL Cup semi final on Thursday, before returning to Premier League action against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
