Sunderland are desperate for attacking strength after failing to score multiple goals in their last seven matches.
In fact, they have achieved the feat just once during Phil Parkinson’s reign, when they defeated Tranmere Rovers 5-0 in Parkinson’s home debut.
Forward Marc McNulty missed out of their lacklustre 1-0 first-round FA Cup defeat at Gillingham but Parkinson expects the 27-year-old to be back in action for this weekend’s potentially important clash with Coventry City.
“Marc has got a tight hamstring. He has had a scan, there is no real damage to the muscle, which is good news but there is some tightness in there.
“Hopefully it will be resolved sooner rather than later. I think he has a chance for the weekend.”
Charlie Wyke remains on the sidelines with an ankle injury while Will Grigg has been disappointing, scoring just once in 15 League One outings this season.
