Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has not enjoyed the greatest of starts since taking over for Jack Ross, winning just two of his first six matches in charge and overseeing an EFL Cup round-of-16 defeat at Oxford United.

Unfortunately, Parkinson has not been able to use 20-year-old Sunderland starlet Elliot Embleton since his arrival, as he has been out with a hamstring injury since their EFL Cup victory over Sheffield United.

Though Embleton surely add a great deal to the current side, it appears he won’t be available for selection for the foreseeable future.

“It’s going to be a long-term injury, unfortunately – it will be a few months before we see Elliot again.

“My talks with the physio would suggest that it will be longer than (the initial eight-week timescale).

“I need to double-check, but when I first came in the physio told me it was a long-term injury.”

Embleton has made five appearances for the Black Cats this season after spending last season on loan at League Two side Grimsby Town.

Sunderland will host fellow League One side Gillingham on Saturday in the first round of the FA Cup.
