Stockport-teenager Phil Foden was the hero of Manchester City’s FA Cup win over Newport County.

Despite scoring twice, Foden was hung up on his relatively lax defensive display which included a mistake that nearly led to a Newport goal in the first half.

An impressive individual effort ended with a two-goal cushion for City and Foden scored again to settle the game after the League Two side pulled one back.

Foden admitted his shortcomings to media after the match when asked if he had any mistakes.

“There were a few! I let my man go in the first half and he nearly scored at the back post. That was a massive one.”

“I’ll definitely dwell on that. That’s the thing I need to learn, the defensive side of the game. I’m going to work on that.”

The youngster has inspired a following among City fans with his attacking play and suggested that he is adapting to his manager’s notoriously detailed instructions

“I’m playing with great players. I’m learning in every game. I’ve just got to keep going.”

“I need to keep going. It’s important to play my game every time I get a chance. That’s what I’m trying to do. I’ve been around the first team for a year now. I’ve learned everything I need to know regarding the basics with Pep.”

“He’s quite strict with his game plans. I know all that now. It’s about stepping forward and trying to impress him. I’m ready to go and I’m trying to make my point.”

The teenager is confident that City can compete on all fronts after advancing to the FA Cup quarter-finals, with the Carabao Cup Final against Chelsea upcoming, and the Champions League series with Schalke imminent.

When asked if the club has the ability to win all four of the competitions they’re currently in, Foden perhaps blurred the line between Manchester City player and life-long fan.

“Definitely, why not? I think we really can. We’ve got all the competitions to play for and hopefully we can win them all.”
