The competitive fire clearly never leaves an athlete.

Although Petr Čech retired from football after losing last season’s Europa League final, he is now back in the world of sport.

The 37-year-old joined former club Chelsea as a technical and performance advisor upon hanging up his gloves.

But he clearly feels he still has something left to give in the sporting world and has surprisingly joined ice hockey outfit Guildford Phoenix.

Čech has long been a fan of the sport and played regularly growing up but will now star as a net-minder for the Surrey-based side.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to play with the Phoenix and build up match experience,” the former goalkeeper told the club’s website.

“I hope I can help this young team achieve their goals for the season and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play.

“After 20 years of football, this is going to be a wonderful experience for me to play the game I loved as a kid.”

Čech will make his debut in his new sport on Sunday.
