2018 Brasileiro Série A champions Palmeiras struggled to test the visiting goalkeeper in Satuday’s key match-up in the Campeonato Paulista.

Corinthians scored early through Danilo Avelar and withstood a barrage of 28 total shots to maintain a clean sheet and claim a victory over the Verdão at Allianz Parque.

After the visitors took the lead, Palmeiras laid on heavy pressure but could not find the back of the net.

Júnior Sornoza played a free kick into the area for the visitors early in the match. Goalkeeper Wéverton did well to save a close-range header but could not stop the follow-up from Danilo Avelar.

The Corinthians full back blasted home the rebound to give his side the lead in just the 8th minute.

Palmeiras nearly answered right back but Dudu hit his shot off of the crossbar. The home side continued to attack but appeared nervous in the final third, rushing to get off efforts that were unlikely to beat Cássio Ramos.

In the second half, Corinthians continued to defend well in the face of pressure from the defending national champions.

The Verdão made attacking substitutions but were unable to change the circumstances on the pitch.

As the home team pushed with greater urgency for a potential equaliser, they left themselves exposed to counterattacks by Corinthians. Gustavo came almost to sealing the victory with five minutes left to play in regulation but his touch let him down.

With time running out, Deyverson compounded the difficulties for Palmeiras. The 27-year-old forward was shown a straight red card for spitting at Corinthians midfielder Richard in the 88th minute.

The result moves Corinthians up to seven points in Group C after matchday 5 of the Campeonato Paulista.

Palmeiras remain at the top of the Group B on 10 points despite dropping their first match of the state tournament.
