Southampton have been warned to be on it immediately in pre-season by Oriol Romeu, in order to avoid a repeat of last season’s disappointing campaign.

A fight against relegation was not what the midfielder and his teammates had in mind before entering the 2018/19 season under Mark Hughes.

The Welshman’s sacking ultimately led to Ralph Hasenhüttl taking over and helping the side avoid the drop.

Romeu suggested that last season’s preparations before the campaign could have been better and he wants no repeat of it this time around.

“Pre-season has to be something we do better,” the former Chelsea man said, as per the Southern Daily Echo.

“We have shown that if we aren’t on it or aren’t at our best then we can’t beat anyone so it is really important to work in pre-season.

“We must work a lot and work hard with the manager, who will help us to start in a good way.”

That isn’t the only thing Romeu wants to see change this summer, having also acknowledged the need for the side to make improvements in attack.

“It is harder to beat us now and it is harder to score goals against us but we’re probably not creating enough chances to score,” added the 27-year-old.

“We need to be better than that. The chances are created by the whole team and the higher you are up the pitch, the more chances you can make.

“If we move the ball up quickly, the strikers get more chances to score. That’s from the whole team and that’s how we need to improve.”
