Miguel Herrera and his Club America side will set out to do what they couldn’t do in the Clausura: win the domestic double.

Despite winning their first Copa MX in 45 years, Las Águilas were unable to defend their 2018 Apertura title – finishing fifth in the regular season on 28 points and bowing out to Club León in the Liguilla semi-finals.

After their Campeón de Campeones triumph, which came after three pre-season defeats, Piojo claimed he wants to go after all four available trophies this season – including the inaugural Leagues Cup that also involves clubs from Major League Soccer.

Despite the loss of Edson Alvarez, América will still be one of the strongest teams in Mexico and should have no trouble making the Liguilla, especially given the addition of Giovani dos Santos.

Key player: Nicolás Castillo

The Chilean needed some time to adjust after his big-money move from Benfica in January and came through with an excellent return of five goals and an assist in 10 matches.

However, he came up short in the Liguilla and failed to contribute offensively – much to the ire of América supporters.

América’s success could very well be solely dependent on his performances.

Player to watch: Giovani dos Santos

Obviously, there’s a lot of intrigue surrounding Giovani dos Santos and what he can bring to the club.

Still not fully-fit, dos Santos has played 79 minutes of competitive club football since last August and performed far below expectations during his last two seasons with Los Angeles Galaxy.

Perhaps his first stint in his home country can provide the spark he needs?

Prediction: Second place (34 points), Liguilla finalists (Tigres)
