NYCFC overpowered an overhyped Montreal Impact side, as three second-half goals propelled the home team to an important three victory, leaving them just three points behind Atlanta United for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Montreal were not only shutout to see their four-match winning streak come to a screeching halt, the Impact did not attempt a single shot on goal. They were limited to just 31% possession on the night, their lowest mark of the season.

Despite dominating from the start, it took New York City an hour to net their opening goal, with Jesús Medina, Ronald Matarrita, and Jonathan Lewis all scoring for the Cityzens within a 16-minute span.

Medina’s effort was well worth the wait, cutting inside and unleashing a rocket that left Impact keeper Evan Bush rooted to the spot to break the deadlock.

Just five minutes later, NYCFC would double the lead behind an incredible chip by Matarrita that is surely an early candidate for MLS goal of the week.

Lewis came off the bench and only needed about 10 minutes to make his impact on proceedings. His first goal came off a lovely chipped assist from Matarrita, securing all three points for the Eastern Conference powerhouse.

NYCFC will face Columbus this Saturday, while Montreal will go back home to host San Jose Earthquakes.
