When the match was five minutes away from ending as the first scoreless edition of the Hudson River Derby, Maxi Moralez capitalized on an error to score.

The two teams, sitting second and third in the Eastern Conference, were very even on Sunday night. Red Bulls and NYC ended the match with identical shots (14) and shots on target (4) figures.

Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra came closest to picking the lock in the 74th minute after strong work by Tyler Adams at the end-line.

Ten minutes later, that Kaku miss felt even worse for the fans in red at Yankee Stadium. Red Bulls centre-back Aaron Long failed to clear the ball or break up the play from substitute forward Jonathan Lewis before Moralez tapped in.

The 85th minute goal, arising out of a defensive mistake, typified a closely contested match with little to separate the two sides of New York.

Domènec Torrent was triumphant in his second game in charge at New York City after Patrick Vieira took the job at Nice in Ligue 1. Meanwhile Chris Armas, who stepped in now that Jesse Marsch is reportedly on his way to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, suffered defeat in his first match at the helm.

The burgeoning rivalry has had several notable results in recent years but this season had been shaded red, considering the Red Bulls beat their blue neighbors 4-0 in the U.S. Open Cup in June and by the same scoreline in the league in May.

Sunday’s performance wasn’t as emphatic as those earlier encounters but the result suits NYC FC fine as they leap-frog their rivals into second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
