Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Martin O’Neill as their new manager.

O’Neill played for Forest for a decade, including the greatest years in the club’s history. The former midfielder was a member of the team that won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.

The 66-year-old now becomes the Forest’s 11th permanent boss since the summer of 2011, replacing Aitor Karanka, who asked to be released from his contract last week.

Forest are currently 9th in the Championship, four points from the play-off places.

The role is O’Neill’s first club job since 2013, when he left Sunderland.

Since then he spent five years as Ireland manager, leading the country to Euro 2016, before leaving his post in November.

The former Wycombe Wanderers, Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa and Sunderland boss played 371 times for Forest from 1971-1981, scoring 62 goals.
