Brazil took a step closer to possible World Cup glory on Monday as they defeated Mexico to reach the quarter-finals and scooped a record on the way.

The Samba stars surpassed Germany as the tournament’s all-time top scorers during their 2-0 victory.

Neymar’s breakthrough strike put Brazil on 227 goals in World Cup history, one ahead of the Germans who will remain on 226 for at least another four years following their shock, early exit.

Roberto Firmino came off the bench to make sure of the win and extend the South American’s tally to 228.

Quite astonishingly, the two nations are far ahead of the rest of the pack, with Argentina next on the list with just 137.

Italy and France are the only countries with more than a century of goals –  128 and 113 respectively – while Spain remain excluded from the 100 club on 99 having been knocked out by Russia.
