With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Newcastle’s all-time XI.

Today we’re choosing the second of the forwards.

Here are the nominees

3rd – Len White

Only two men have scored more goals for Newcastle than Len White, with his 153 strikes for the club in the 1950s and early ’60s but he was overshadowed in the early part of his career by one of those players, Jackie Milburn.

After Milburn’s departure, White grew into his own and became a regular source of goals thanks to his pace, strength and deadly finishing.

He may not have received the plaudits he deserved but still ended his career with over 150 Magpies strikes and an FA Cup winner’s medal.

2nd – Andrew Cole

In just under two years at St James’ Park, Cole proved himself to be one of the most ruthless strikers ever to play for the club with his stunning scoring exploits.

His 12 goals in as many games fired his side to promotion after joining and his exploits the following year where ridiculous – his 41 goals in all competitions in 1993/94 are a club record.

That is one that is unlikely to be bettered and there was understandable fury among fans when he was sold to Manchester United after netting 68 goals in 84 games.

And the winner is
 Jackie Milburn

Even today, those who never saw Milburn play still speak about ‘Wor Jackie’ in glowing terms and when you look at what he did for the club, you understand why.

He scored 200 goals in 397 appearances and managed another 38 during wartime fixtures so he could technically lay a claim to being Newcastle’s all-time scorer.

Milburn fired his local club to FA Cup glory on three occasions and was devastating in front of goal after being moved in from his previous role wider on the left.

That change proved to be a masterstroke for a man who is so beloved at Newcastle that he has a both a stand and a statue at the stadium in his honour.
