Jonjo Shelvey will miss Newcastle’s crucial match against Huddersfield with a thigh injury.

The 26-year-old was absent for last week’s defeat against Wolves, and the Chronicle reports that Shelvey traveled to Barcelona to see a specialist this week.

Though he arrived back at Tyneside in time for Saturday’s match, Rafa Benítez will exercise caution and not rush him back into action.

After picking up the injury in their 1-0 win over Watford, the 26-year-old has played just 20 minutes in Newcastle’s last five Premier League matches.

Newcastle will also be without centre-back Federico Fernández, making way for Florian Lejeune to potentially make his comeback just four months after suffering a devastating ACL tear.

Back-up goalkeeper Karl Darlow misses out, while DeAndre Yedlin is suspended due to the straight red card he picked up in last week’s loss.

“The problem we have is that Yedlin is suspended,” Benitez said. “Fede Fernandez has a knock on his calf and, although he is still progressing, he is not available for the game.

“Darlow has a problem but hopefully he will be fully fit and back next week. Shelvey is another one that we have to assess in around ten days so we’ll have to see how he is doing and decide how long it will take.

“Florian is getting closer to playing but he will not play against Huddersfield. For Lejeune, it is great news because, if you think about his cruciate ligament injury, normally it takes six to nine months to recover.

“In four months, he is already playing so I think it is very good news for the team.”
