Newcastle seemed set to activate their £10m purchase option for Eintracht Frankfurt left-back Jetro Willems but they are now believed to be walking away from the deal after the latest update on the 25-year-old’s knee injury.
Willems was in fantastic form for the Magpies but saw his season come to an end after going down during their 1-0 win over Chelsea at St. James’ Park back in January.
According to Bild, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Dr Florian Pfab has discovered that Willems has suffered tears in both his anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, in addition to what’s been described as cartilage damage in his knee.
It’s now believed that Willems will be off the training ground for eight to nine months and isn’t expected to be able to play again until February 2021 at the earliest.
Bild also claim that Frankfurt have also claimed that Willems has suffered a ‘very serious injury for a footballer’, which has put some doubt on whether or not he’ll ever be able to make a full recovery.
At Frankfurt, the Netherlands international is currently under contract until June 2021.
During Willems’ 20 matches at Newcastle, he provided two goals and three assists and had secured a place as an everyday starter under manager Steve Bruce.
