Faitout Maouassa admits he ‘was not ready’ to join Newcastle last month.
The Rennes left-back revealed it is a dream to one day play in the Premier League but felt a move now would be too soon.
Maouassa, only 20, was one of a number of defenders the Magpies looked at with reports in France claiming they made an €8m move which was turned down.
Newcastle ended up signing Antonio Barreca from Monaco after a transfer for Jordan Lukaku fell through when the Belgian failed a medical.
However, Maouassa, currently on loan at Ligue 1 Nimes, insists the timing for him was not right.
“I must admit, with Newcastle, it did shock me because everyone dreams of playing in the Premier League,” he told L’Equipe.
“But I was not ready. I still have to grow.”
Newcastle, who are only clear of the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference, travel to Wolves on Monday night.
