Newcastle got themselves out of the drop zone this weekend with three massive points that sent them up to 17th in the table – two points above Cardiff.

Managers typically aim for around 40 points to secure safety from relegation and Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles latest target would put them right about at that mark.

“Five more wins will probably secure it for us. So those games are going to be important,” said Lascelles.

“Against the lower teams, you get a similar style of play – good energy – but what we have over them is quality.

“We have quality all over the pitch, with Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez up front, and good centre-halves. That’s what will be the difference, I think.”

Newcastle put some of their home woes to bed after defeating Cardiff 3-0 this past weekend. That was just their third home victory of the season.

Now the Magpies have a pair of home ties within the next week and Lascelles hopes they can give their fans a good show.

“It’s nice to know we have those home games coming up and we want to make sure we get wins in them,” said Lascelles.

“But we have to take it step by step and first need to concentrate on Watford (in Saturday’s FA Cup tie), then Manchester City and Tottenham.

“I fancy us against City, with our fans behind us, and their style of play against ours. Cardiff was a massive result, so we want it to be a turning point and we can stay out of it now.”
