Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has denied claims he will leave the club amidst reports that Tottenham are set to swoop for the defender.

The 24-year-old was arguably the Magpies best player last term, and was inspirational in their fight against relegation.

That lead to speculation of a move this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side believed to be the most likely destination.

However the England youth international has insisted that his only focus is on playing and winning for Newcastle.

“I don’t really take much notice of it,” he told the Shields Gazette. “Since I was 16, there’s always been speculation and interest from clubs.

“My dad’s always said to me, and he still says now, ‘don’t take any notice of it – just concentrate on your job, work hard and be the best player you can be’.

“Your football will take care of yourself if you do that.

“I’m happy. I’m a Newcastle player. I’m still tied down to a long contract. It’s about having a good pre-season and starting the season right.”
