New Sunderland signing Joel Lynch is confident his side can earn promotion back to the Championship after last season’s play-off heartbreak.

The Black Cats lost to Charlton in last term’s final at Wembley with a stoppage time Patrick Bauer goal giving the Addicks a 2-1 victory.

Lynch, who signed as a free agent over the summer after leaving QPR, believes that Sunderland are already Championship quality and should be aiming for automatic promotion.

“I feel like I’m coming in to what is already a Championship team,” he told the Sunderland Echo.

“It’s just a case of getting out of League One which is tough because teams come to the Stadium of Light and it’s their biggest game of the season.

“I think if you put this team in the Championship they would up their levels again – there is no reason why not, because there is enough quality there and there are some good young players.

“And the players that I was playing against last season are not as good as some of the players that are here.”

The Wearsiders are currently eighth in League One having won three of their opening six games.
