Jorge Sampaoli has only been in the Santos job a few weeks but already he’s upset some of their more die-hard fans.
Appointed just before Christmas to lead the Brazilian giants back to their former glory, having finished the 2018 domestic campaign in 10th place.
It was seen as something of a coup for the Sao Paulo outfit to land a former Argentina and Sevilla coach in the supposed prime of his career.
But in one of his first press conferences the 58-year-old has put his foot right in it when referring back to some of the club’s former stars.
“When I joined Santos I joined a team with a lot of history – so I was excited to get here,” he said on Monday.
“We have to live up to the history of Pelé, Neymar and Ronaldinho.”
There’s just one problem with that statement though – Ronaldinho never actually played for Santos.
D’oh!
