Perhaps playing a friendly against Manchester United in the United States just three days before your first match of the new season is not a good idea.

Club América have been made to look foolish after losing in the opening round of the 2018 Apertura 2-1 at Necaxa.

The home side struck first just after the half-hour mark when they caught regular Paraguayan international centre-back Bruno Valdez absolutely napping, allowing Víctor Dávila to break through and score an amazing goal. The Chilean attacker’s shot left Agustín Marchesín rooted to his spot.

Although the match was pretty devoid of any real chances, Las Águilas did have a very big bright spot, seeing debutant Roger Martínez fire home the equaliser in the 72nd minute. The Colombian Martínez, 24, spent a very successful year-and-a-half with Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning before getting loaned to Villareal in the January window. The Spanish side bought and immediately sold the striker to Club América, where he has had an incredible pre-season.

However, the lead only lasted two minutes, as Necaxa would start their season off with three big points, thanks to Argentine forward Brian Fernández, who scored in some style after coming off the bench less than 15 minutes earlier.

Club América will look to do better next week when they host Atlas, while Necaxa will try to make it six points out of six against Pumas.
