New England Revolution defeated the Western Conference leaders, Sporting Kansas City, with a lonely and controversial goal scored by Teal Bunbury.

Bunbury was standing in a clear off-side position when he got the ball in the box before displicently slipping a near post shot. It looked like even he thought it wouldn’t count.

Sporting’s defenders and goalkeeper didn’t seem to do much to stop Bunbury as they assumed the off-side call will prevail.

But after VAR’s intervention, the decision was overturned, and Bunbury’s goal was granted. The criteria that gave the Revs the goal, was that as KC’s Roger Espinoza attempted to take the ball away from Diego FagĂșndez, he unintentionally ended up “passing” to Bunbury and therefore enabling New England’s forward to score.

This was Sporting’s first defeat since Matchday 1, which ended a seven-game undefeated streak.
