Newcastle United could lose midfielder Mohamed Diame due to their contract policy, he has revealed.

The 31-year-old’s current deal at St James’ Park is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Although Diamé has expressed a willingness to remain at the club, the Magpies are unwilling to offer players over 30 longer contracts.

If he starts 25 games this season, it will trigger an automatic one-year extension but he is currently marooned on 23.

“I need two more starts to get that one extra year but the situation is the same,” Diamé told the Chronicle.

“I spoke with the club about my contract and I asked for two more years but they don’t want that.

“We know what they want for the club so it is difficult to get an extension here when you are over 30.

“For me, it isn’t a problem. It is part of the job. If I get the chance, I’ll stay and if not, I’ll go somewhere else.”

The former Wigan man hasn’t started for Newcastle since 1 April against Arsenal.
