With the World Cup finally over, focus can now shift back to domestic competitions.
Buckle up and get ready for a full slate of action.
Twelve points separate first-place FC Dallas from the Houston Dynamo in the Western Conference standings, and this year’s Texas derby is expected to be a barnburner.
Houston is currently below the playoff line and really need to take three points from the Western Conference leaders in order to make a serious playoff push.
FC Dallas have won three of their last four games, including a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire last Saturday.
Four of the last five MLS meetings between Houston and FC Dallas have ended in draws, the lone win going to FC Dallas in June 2016.
Honorable mentions: New York Red Bulls – New England Revolution
Vancouver has lost two straight matches heading into the Cascadia clash. They will have to face around 72,000 Seattle fans at CenturyLink Field, and face the Sounders in their best form of the year.
Seattle are unbeaten in their last three matches, which has helped them get out of the Western Conference basement.
They’re still 11 points outside of a playoff spot, but after earning a surprising draw on the road at Atlanta last week, the defending Western Conference champions are showing signs of life at just the right time.
Honorable mention: Orlando City over Columbus Crew, DC United over Atlanta United
Wayne Rooney played an instrumental part in two of DC United’s goals in a shocking 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps and is settling nicely in his new home.
United are forced to hit the road and go into Supporter’s Shield leaders Atlanta United, who themselves are coming off a very disappointing 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders.
Atlanta have only won two of their last six matches in all competitions and are in their worst form of the year.
This Eastern Conference battle of first versus worst will be plenty entertaining.
