NYCFC established themselves as title front-runners after another convincing victory.
A bunch of unexpected results all across the league causes the power rankings to dramatically shift once again.
How’s your team stack up after week 6?
While they might not be the sexiest team in the league, they are one of only two that remain unbeaten and have given up just three goals in their first four matches of the season. They probably should have won at least one of their past two matches, however.
LAFC got ran over by a heavily-armed Atlanta United squad. They’ll have to rebound quickly if they want to compete against a very formidable, yet beatable Vancouver Whitecaps side.
After an opening-day loss to the Philadelphia Union in which they received a 24th-minute red card, New England have quietly moved into third place in the Eastern Conference, unexpectedly going unbeaten in their previous four fixtures. It will be challenging for them to keep up this pace, as eight of the Revs’ next nine matches are against teams in these power rankings.
You could see the loss to Real Salt Lake coming from a mile away. Vancouver are averaging only three shots on goal per match in 2018 and ran into one of the league’s best goalkeepers in Nick Rimando. They’ll have to improve their offensive production if the Whitecaps are going to contend for a title this season.
Ever since coming in at number one in our power rankings, Columbus has only picked up four points in their last four matches. They’ve lost their last two matches against Vancouver and Chicago despite owning 67 and 65 per cent possession, respectively, and outshooting them 31-10 combined.
Free-flowing SKC has shrugged off an opening-season defeat to NYCFC to go five straight unbeaten in the league. Tim Melia came up huge with a ten-save clean sheet against an up-and-coming Los Angeles Galaxy side. The Western Conference’s best team should feel comfortable heading into their match this Sunday against the Sounders.
Toronto FC looked unbelievable in their sweep of Club América to reach the CONCACAF Champions League final against Chivas. They’re only the third team to do so. Starting on Saturday, TFC will have to play five matches in a two-week span. Let’s see how their CCL progress affects their MLS play.
Atlanta United took full advantage of their extra year of experience and destroyed LAFC by a 5-0 margin. This sets up an unbelievable early season clash with NYCFC which could be an early indicator as to who represents the Eastern Conference in the MLS Cup.
NYCFC looked incredible once again, dominating from the opening whistle to take all three points against a hobbling Real Salt Lake squad. They look like real front-runners this season after starting the first six matches unbeaten and now David Villa has returned to the lineup to make things interesting. Villa missed the last three matches with a calf injury. They’ve also only given up four goals.
