Minnesota United hammered LAFC on Sunday, using a Christian Ramirez brace and another unbelievable performance by Darwin Quintero to demolish LAFC 5-1.

The Loons took full advantage of LAFC resting star striker Adama Diomande and centre-back Walker Zimmerman to put on a five-star performance behind Quintero’s goal and two assists.

After an underwhelming two goal, eight assist season for Club América last year, Quintero now has 10 goals and five assists, adding this dazzling display to his resume. He had seven shots, including five on target.

Manager Adrian Heath named an unchanged lineup as Minnesota fans went into Sunday’s match very cautious, despite being on a sizzling tear, and have now won four of their last five matches.

Finnish midfielder Rasmus Schüller started the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing off a lovely feed from Quintero. However, it would take less than a minute for Benny Feilhaber to equalise for LAFC.

The match looked to be going into half-time level at one, but Minnesota kept their foot on the gas and delivered a one-minute double to lead 3-1 at the intermission. LAFC’s poor set-piece defending cost them dearly as Ramirez would produce the lethal finish to put the Loons ahead. Quintero would get his reward for a stellar match by getting behind the LAFC back line and curling one past helpless Tyler Miller as he now has six goals and four assists in his last five matches. Incredible.

LAFC obviously did not make the right adjustments as they once again gave up a pair of goals in quick succession. In the 56th and 58th minutes, Minnesota killed the match off through Ibarra, as LAFC had yet another lapse of concentration in the back. Ibarra would get an assist of his own with an inch-perfect pass to Ramirez at the back post that was finished with the simplest of touches to finish the rout.

And for those who were wondering, Quintero was this close to chipping the keeper again.

LAFC blew their chance to cut FC Dallas’ Western Conference lead to one point while Minnesota is now just two points behind Real Salt Lake for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
