Miguel Herrera and Club América were expected to waltz into Guatemala and put on a dominant display in Wednesday night’s CONCACAF Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash with Comunicaciones.
However, it took a 90th-minute equaliser from Sebastián Córdova to rescue a 1-1 draw and now there will be all to play for in next Wednesday’s return leg at the Estadio Azteca.
After the match, Piojo slammed the officiating crew, calling them “very bad” while also ranting over a pair of missed calls.
“What conclusions? We should have won the game if they blow the whistle on two clear penalties,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“It’s not like they are doubtful either. The first one, the player has his hand up. The other time, the defender pulls the striker’s shirt while he’s shooting. We could clearly see it.”
América were not the only Mexican club to experience an unexpectedly difficult match on Wednesday, as El Salvadorian outfit Alianza upset Tigres 2-1.
Cruz Azul were nearly beaten on Tuesday in Jamaica but scored a pair of late stoppage-time goals to defeat Portmore 2-1, while Club León handled LAFC with relative ease, winning by a 2-0 scoreline.
