Wolves right-back Matt Doherty didn’t play a single minute over the international break as Ireland drew Denmark 1-1 before defeating Gibraltar 2-0 on Monday night in Euro 2020 qualifiers.

While Seamus Coleman occupied the right-back position, Ireland manager Mick McCarthy didn’t consider using Doherty in a midfield role as he had when Ireland knocked off Gibraltar 1-0 in March qualifiers.

When asked if Doherty was to blame for Ireland’s poor performance against Gibraltar the first time around, McCarthy scoffed and said his decisions were purely based on talent.

“It’s a ridiculous assessment of it,” the 60-year-old replied.

“In my opinion, Seamus is the best right-back. I think Matt is a fabulous right-back but, unfortunately for him, I think Seamus is a better one.

“At this moment in time why would I leave Seamus out? But it’s always about someone who doesn’t play.

“The other thing about Seamus is he’s a fabulous personality and the captain of the team. It’s just difficult, you know.

“I can’t say anything other than that or give you any other reasons. I really love Matt Doherty. I signed him at Wolves, he’s had a great career.

“But it (decision) is my preference. That’s what it is and the manager has to have it. It’s unfortunate.”

Ireland are unbeaten through four matches and top Group D over Denmark and Switzerland with 10 points.
