Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri claims members of Burnley’s staff repeatedly called him a “shit Italian” during Monday night’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ top four hopes were dealt a blow when they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Clarets and Sarri was sent to the stands after tempers flared on the touchline at the end of a feisty encounter.

Afterwards, Chelsea assistant coach Gianfranco Zola told reporters that the club were planning to report Burnley to the Football Association after their coaching staff allegedly “offended” Sarri.

And according to the Telegraph, the former Napoli boss has claimed he was on the receiving end of a xenophobic insult.

The allegation has been passed on to referee Roger East for inclusion in his report, which will subsequently be passed on to the FA.

If found guilty, members of Burnley’s backroom staff could be charged under Rule E3 (1) for “indecent words or behaviour” and E3 (2) where an aggravated breach which “includes a reference to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability.”

The standard punishment for this offence is a five-match ban and a £20,000 fine.
