After 94 minutes of Newcastle’s trip to Everton on Tuesday night, the visitors looked dead and buried.

But a well-taken Florian Lejeune overhead kick gave them hope before utter anarchy ensued shortly afterwards in the Everton area.

It was the mother of all goalmouth scrambles and somehow ended with Lejeune turning the ball home after goal-line technology ruled his effort had crossed the line.

Attempting to add some clarity to the chaos, Matty Longstaff discussed the incredible moment the defender levelled for the travelling Toon Army.

“I was waiting for Emil [Krafth] to try and kick the ball in as he had about two or three attempts,” recalled Longstaff, quoted by the Chronicle.

“I thought [Jordan] Pickford had managed to get a hold of it but luckily it’s counted when we turned to the referee.

“It was a crazy finish when everyone ran straight to the supporters and I imagine they’ll be heading home a lot happier than they would have after 89 minutes.

“I think that game shows the fight that we have shown throughout this season and the never-say-die attitude we have even when we weren’t at our best.

“We can still cause a threat and I think Florian will remember that moment for a while, scoring two goals in the last minute.

“It was absolutely mental!”

The Magpies astonishing comeback win means they have been beaten only once in their five fixtures in 2020.
