Wolves right-back Matt Doherty only absence this season came back in August against Everton and it’s fortunate the Ireland international did not have to miss any more time.
While on international duty, the 27-year-old revealed that his ‘small surgery for an undisclosed issue’ was actually a skin cancer scare.
Luckily, tests came back negative and Doherty has since returned to regular first-team play.
“It was something like a freckle. I thought it was nothing but the doc saw it,” he told Dublin Live.
“I told him it had been there for about a year and it had probably got a bit bigger. So we went to the dermatologist and she was like: ‘I don’t like it, you’re going to have to have it cut out’.
“So in your head you’re thinking,‘okay, what’s the worst case scenario?’
“Skin cancer – that word was mentioned but not in a threatening way. It was just ‘let’s see what happens’. I was never really in full panic mode.”
Doherty and Ireland will host Georgia on Saturday before their other Euro 2020 qualifier in Switzerland on Tuesday.
