Real Madrid midfielder Martin Ødegaard insists joining Real Sociedad on-loan was his decision – not the club’s.

Ødegaard was heavily linked with Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax, instead preferring to join the LaLiga side next season.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign with Vitesse and insists his development will be taken care of in San Sebastián.

“I had other options but Real is the perfect club for me,” he told Ekstrabladet. “I will have chances to progressing.

“I came here because Real Sociedad is a club where the young players are able to develop. This was my decision.

“Real Madrid wanted the best for me and showed a lot of respect. They want me to be happy and develop into the best player I can be.”

Ahead of his departure, Ødegaard signed a new four-year deal with Los Blancos.
