Martin Dúbravka has admitted he was emotional after the Newcastle fans chanted his name during their win over Huddersfield at the weekend.

The Czech shot-stopper has come in for criticism of late, making game-changing mistakes at Tottenham and Wolves.

But the St James’ Park faithful were in full voice on Saturday as they came to the defence of their goalkeeper in the 2-0 win against the Terriers.

“I don’t know what to say. It was just amazing for me,” Dúbravka told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“As soon as I came on the pitch they supported all of us.

“Look at the banner for Almiron . . . what a feeling for him on his debut. He also had a standing ovation.

“The players can build confidence off that and I really appreciate that. They stay behind us all the time.

“The fans are special here. You can feel it at home and away, they travel wherever we go and stay with us.

“That’s why it was amazing that we were able to celebrate together at the end of a great win.”

Newcastle are currently in 15th place, four points clear of the relegation places, and face Burnley on Tuesday.
