Marouane Fellaini “doesn’t think” Manchester United are too far away from reaching Manchester City’s level this season.

José Mourinho’s side are currently sitting in eighth position after 12 games – a mammoth 12 points behind their city rivals and table-toppers.

But despite all evidence to the contrary, the giant Belgian midfielder believes that his team can compete for the title come May.

“I don’t think [we’re far away],” he told Sky Sports.

“I remember when I arrived in England it was a top four, now it is a top six, so every year it is more difficult.

“Next season we will see how it changes and in two and three years I think every year it is more difficult, the intensity is higher, so that’s why the Premier League is attractive.

“Manchester City are strong, but I think they will lose. Ok, they are very good and they have good players but it’s possible to beat them. We lost, but we have the second game at Old Trafford and we will see.”

Fellaini started in United’s 3-1 defeat to City before the international break and could be in line to play when they take on Crystal Palace this Saturday.
