Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso says the team only have themselves to blame for defeat at Arsenal.

First-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny gave the Gunners a deserved 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

“We made silly mistakes,” Alonso said after the game.

“We provoked them to gain confidence and come to press us because we were making mistakes. In the second half we tried but it was too late and we couldn’t score.

“When you lose, you learn. We have to analyse the game and improve quickly because there is no time to think. We have to perform again in four days.”

Chelsea face Tottenham on Thursday in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg. The Blues will have to overturn a one-goal deficit at Stamford Bridge and Maurizio Sarri will be hoping for more from his players after blaming Saturday’s loss on them.

With a win on Saturday, Chelsea could have moved nine points clear of Arsenal. Now the gap is just three points and the race for the top four is on.

“It was a good opportunity,” Alonso admitted.

“We wasted it and now we have to work even harder to stay in a Champions League position and win games. It has to motivate us.”
