Leeds United started their EFL Cup in style, seeing off Salford City 3-0 away thanks to goals from Eddie Nketiah, Gaetano Berardi, and Mateusz Klich.

When asked after the match if Leeds could make a deep tournament run, manager Marcelo Bielsa seemed quite optimistic.

“For us it’s very positive,” Bielsa said. “It means that all of our players play and we have players to come in and a group of young players that are looking to play games.”

The young Arsenal loanee Nketiah was given the start up top as a lone striker and only needed 43 minutes to give his side the lead in his Leeds debut.

Leeds would extend their lead to three before the hour-mark and Bielsa was thrilled to see the 20-year-old make the necessary adjustments to help Leeds see off Salford City.

“He created movement as a striker but during the first half we didn’t have enough spaces,” said Bielsa.

“Then in the second half we when we had more spaces he worked closer to Costa and Clarke.”

Leeds will face Stoke City in the second round on 27 August.
