A young goalkeeper, captaining Schalke, set to move to Bayern Munich.
Doesn’t it sound familiar?
Just as Manuel Neuer did the deed in 2011, leaving Gelsenkirchen on a free transfer, Alexander Nübel is expected to do the same thing.
The 23-year-old has established himself as Schalke’s number one goalkeeper over the past 12 months, seeing off fan favourite Ralf Fährmann last season.
Now playing under David Wagner, Nübel’s position has only been solidified; the goalkeeper was handed the armband at the Veltins Arena in the summer. But that decision came amid some controversy – Nübel now has less than a year remaining on his Schalke contract.
Despite attempts from the club to extend, the goalkeeper has stood firm in the face of links with Bayern Munich and bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund.
According to Bild, “all signs in Gelsenkirchen” now point towards the stopper taking the Neuer route and moving to the Allianz Arena.
With Neuer now 33 and his form more shaky than any other time in the past decade, Nübel would move to Bayern Munich with the hope of displacing the Germany legend.
