Borussia Dortmund could have a big boost this weekend with Manuel Akanji almost ready to return.
A hip problem has ruled the defender out since December but is now back in team training.
His comeback would provide a the team with a timely boost.
“I feel a lot better,” Akanji told the club’s YouTube channel at the weekend, “and I hope to be back on the pitch soon. I’m not in pain anymore.”
According to local newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten, the Swiss could be back in action on Sunday, when Dortmund host Leverkusen.
With Akanji missing, the Black and Yellows have failed to win any of their last five games.
An eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga has been cut to three points by Bayern Munich and Dortmund are 3-0 down to Tottenham after losing the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.
Welcoming the Swiss back on Sunday would be huge against a Leverkusen side on top form. They’ve won four games in a row under former Dortmund head coach Peter Bosz, including the 3-1 defeat of Bayern Munich.
If Sunday comes too soon, Akanji is expected to return by next Friday, when Dortmund face Augsburg, at the latest.
