Manchester United came into the summer transfer window with big plans but are set to be disappointed.
From the very start of the summer, reports have emphasised the club’s ambition to bring in young British talent.
It seems Daniel James will join from Swansea City but other targets – such Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – do not seem likely to move.
According to the Evening Standard, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now “reluctantly accepts” moves for Sancho and Rice are out of reach.
The pair, who started for England on Thursday night, are likely to stay at current clubs Borussia Dortmund and West Ham.
Sancho is under contract in Dortmund until 2021 and the club have insisted he is going nowhere.
“We haven’t had any offers, we aren’t expecting any and we don’t want any,” sporting director Michael Zorc said in April.
“He will continue playing at Borussia Dortmund next season. Everyone can spare making any approach.”
Rice, meanwhile, signed a deal to 2024 back in December. The midfielder has recently talked up his “special relationship” with the Hammers’ faithful.
Manchester United will probably have to turn elsewhere for signings this summer.
