Manchester United have reportedly exercised an option to extend David De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford by one year and keep him at the club until 2020.

According to the BBC, the keeper’s “contract was due to end in the summer, allowing him to talk to overseas clubs from 1 January and sign a pre-contract agreement.

“However, United have extended his deal for another year.”

The deal will come as a blow to other European clubs who have had their eyes on De Gea.

Real Madrid had consistently been linked with him and of late, so too had Juventus and PSG.

Given that he has been Manchester United’s player of the year for five of the last six seasons, though, it will be news that is treated with relief on the red half of Manchester.

De Gea is reported to have rejected an offer of around £275,000-a-week and wants £300,000-a-week as his basic salary.
